James McCluskey

Professor McCluskey, MD, FRCPA is Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at The University of Melbourne, Australia.
Professor McCluskey trained in Perth as a physician and pathologist. He spent 4 years at the NIH and since returning to Australia he has worked at Monash University, Flinders University and the Australian Red Cross Blood Service.
Professor McCluskey joined The University of Melbourne in 1997 and has an international reputation for his research in basic and clinical immunology and is recognised for his leadership in the field of HLA and the major histocompatibility complex (MHC).
Professor McCluskey's research has contributed significantly to our understanding of the biology of the MHC, the biochemistry of antigen presentation and the mechanisms of systemic autoimmunity.
Professor McCluskey is currently the Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Medicine Dentistry and Health Sciences and a member of the Board of Directors of St Vincent’s Institute and the Macfarlane Burnet Institute for Medical Research and Public Health (Burnet Institute).
Professor McCluskey has been a consultant immunologist to the Victorian Transplantation and Immunogenetics Service for the last 12 years. He is Editor-in-Chief of the international immunogenetics journal Tissue Antigens. He is past President of the Australasian Society for Immunology, the Australasian and South East Asian Tissue Typing Society and International Histocompatibility Workshop Group.
